Update on December 13th, 2007:

Digg™ made a major update on the site, adding choosable media type and some new containers. This is mainly a compatibility update.

Version 1.2

Added features
Toggle between media types
The legend palette is no more hidden when it doesn't fit screen. It is now grouped with the options palette so it's always available.
Fixed bugs
Diggtris won't break anymore when digg™ adds new containers :)

Ok, go play already!

Update on July 10th, 2007:

Wow. So I left town (and internet) for weekend on friday afternoon and at the time diggtris had about 15 diggs.

On monday morning I returned and behold, this thing had collected almost 3000 diggs!
And over 40000 visitors.
And a whopping $0.59 in ad revenue (yeah, maybe I should reconsider the placement of the ads :).

Didn't quite see that one coming, especially after my first take on the Digg API got only ten diggs...

After I had read the comments on digg, I felt obliged to at least fix the bugs and add the most requested features.
And here we go:

Version 1.1

Added features
Choose between popular and upcoming stories (defaults to popular stories)
Choose between diggtris shapes and classic shapes (defaults to diggtris shapes)
Hard drop (mapped to spacebar)
Optional ghost piece (disabled by default)
Fixed bugs
The dreaded "undefined bug" (which was probably caused by the Digg API becoming a bit laggy because of diggtris :)
Notes
Domain diggtris.com points now to the game.
The choice between popular and upcoming stories was implemented already in the first version but left disabled - the upcoming stories just aren't that much fun to play with because of the many small (1- and 2-digg) pieces. So, gameplay-wise, the best option is to use upcoming stories with classic shapes.
Other considered-but-not-included features:
  • Incontrollable pieces based on already-visible stories - made the game just too frustrating.
  • Incontrollable pieces based on comments on the visible stories that would blow away some blocks - made the game too random and frustrating.
  • Creating pieces based on comments - would only have worked with classic shapes.
  • Scoring points based on the number of diggs the pieces have - made the scores too unbalanced.
  • Saving highscores - somebody would have figured out how to fill the highscore table with 99999999 in about two minutes.

Enough with the blabbering, lemme play!
